Andy talks about search engine tech
In the video linked from this page, old friend Andy Edmonds can be seen discussing with Robert Scoble how MSN Search works and how they've been striving to make it better and smarter.
I mention this partly because it's an interesting discussion to watch, and also because Andy's position with MSN Search brought back some memories of the pre-blog version of web-graphics. Note, the rest of this post is just reminiscing.
When I first purchased this domain I really wasn't sure what I'd do with it. For a while I parked a weird translucent 3-D logo in the corner and ignored it. Sometime after, I met Andy at a local internet technology group. He was doing interesting things with cold-fusion at the time and had some pretty radical ideas. He suggested we make web-graphics into a search engine of sorts, one that was focused around web graphics and web technology. He not only built it, but created a completely intense three dimensional stack-of-card interface. Search results would return in a stack, which you could mouse-over to see details about. It was neat stuff, and I learned a lot from Andy when we worked on that.
Technical Diversion from Andy:
The cards UI, pictured below, took advantage of recently released innerHTML in IE 4.0. That, along with absolute positioning and z-Index potentials, set me to thinking with Nate's nifty domain name.
