Mozilla Firefox 1.0 Released!
You all know it, but it's worth being said out loud - today marks the end of the single browser web! Mozilla Firefox, the single browser so far that has been able to take market share from Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows, has reached 1.0 status. Downloadable from one of eight American mirrors or one of three European mirrors as of today, it's perhaps the biggest event for the open source movement yet.
And even more Mozilla Firefox - there are a number of third party, optimised builds out there, if you feel if's sluggish. If you have a Windows PC (x86-32/IA32 or x86-64 processor) you might want to check out MOOX:Optimized Firefox & Thunderbird Builds. If you have a Macintosh, you might be interested in the G4 (PPC 7450/PPC 7400) optimised Firefox builds or the G5 (PPC 970) optimised Firefox builds. More third party builds can be found at MozillaZine:Third Party/Unofficial Builds.
I usually talk about the new features of the releases, but today I think there's no need to. There are no major feature changes since the preview release or the release candidates.
On another note, on Kevin Gerish's blog you can read about:Aquafication which talks about both the choice made to release the 1.0 version of Firefox on the Macintosh platform at the same time as for Linux and Windows, and the delay in aquafication of Firefox that this means.

I've run into a clear: both; problem in CSS. Has anybody else seen a problem with clear: both; in Firefox 1.0?

I think the current interface is lovely. I fear it will be less so when "aquafied."

Great news. Good to see that you can also use the address bar's "I'm feeling lucky" functionality with non-ASCII characters now.
Minor nitpick: the default Home page looks good, but is far from standards compliant...

Egor: There was a last-minute checking of the fix for the old Mozilla Clearing Bug in BUG #148994. Might this be related to your problem?

liorean: I ran the Mozilla Clearing Bug link you provided but the floats still aren't overlapping properly. I've installed MOOX M2 of the new Firefox release, FYI.

The bug is fixed in the official ff1.0 build, as this screenshot shows. Compare to the older behavior of which an image can be seen at the bottom of the screen shot. (Hmm, I need to work on my sentence structure...)

The only thing I dislike is the removal of the Style Switcher from the status bar. I hadn't installed the PR and RC on my main computer because of that and had heard it'd be back in the final.
Anyway the final release rocks! and it's getting a huge coverage on the net.

The Optimoz Mouse Gestures extension, which I use extensively, seems to not have updated it's version support from 0.10 to 1.0. This is so far the only gripe I have with it. I miss my mouse rockers.

Ooooh. I was thinking that the faulty behavior was the correct way it should have been rendered. That makes sense to me now. Cool. Also, I'll have to agree with Mathieu that taking away the Style Switch in the status bar was a bad idea. By the way, liorean, you'd be pinged from my new post if you had trackbacks running....

Well, the default on WG is to not accept trackback pings. I don't know really why not, but I guess that is a conscious choice Nate has made. I don't think I've ever seen it used in any WG post, so I never use it either.

If your old extensions do not work you can make the browser "pretend" its version is 0.10, not 1.0. But keep in mind you do it at your own risk.
Here's how: enter "about:config" in the address bar, and change app.extensions.version from 1.0 to 0.10.
BTW, All-in-One Mouse Gestures is compatible with 1.0. That's my favorite mouse gestures extension.

J.J. lack of trackbacks was a conscious choice. The thought being that they add complexity to the interface, and that explaining the purpose of them clearly was more trouble than the value they add.
I'm not so sure I believe that anymore, I think they could be used in subtle ways so as to not interfere. Obviously this comment is way off track, but we are due for a major overhaul here as soon as a time slot opens up for me, so I'll be asking readers who are interested for feedback (probably a survey?) sometime soon.
OK, back to the topic at hand.

Hmm, I uninstalled the Optimoz Mouse Gestures, then installed again and it works nicely again!
