Reader feedback wanted

  • Reported by Nate

So I've been trying out this reBlog system, I really like the functionality that it adds - namely the ability to browse through posts made by anyone on the blogroll and make quick note of their posts here at webgraphics. The reBlog specific MT template tags means that there's lots of different ways to actually implement this functionality. So I'm asking for feedback, either in comments to this post if you'd like to discuss, or in an email to me. Here's what is on the table to consider:

  • Should reBlogging even happen, or would you rather only get original content here?
  • Do you like the idea of reBlogging, but would prefer it to be separated from main posts, and with a different RSS feed? (making it more of a typical sidebar blog)
  • Perhaps you like having both regular posts and reBlog post folded into one feed, but don't like how I've styled up the reBlog posts (definitely needs work), perhaps you have suggestions on how you'd like to see it?

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to share their opinion on this stuff, your feedback is greatly appreciated.

I am in favor of the second suggestion: separate it from the main posts and with a different RSS feed. A sidebar blog sounds like a good idea, but then preferably from the same side as the current navigation, cfr. The Hivelogic Narrative's News Bits bar.

I may not like the reBlogging thing... but I'd rather go and have the reBlog posts on a second feed or a separate section of the website. It's getting too cluttered (IMO), I go to web-graphics.com to see 'their' content not 'someone else's content'. ;)

I'm also in favor of the separate section and feed for the reBlogging thing.

I think it would be best to separated from main posts. It's nice and all, but can get... bloaty... with your other posts.

I think it might be a good idea, but it should be kept separated. It clutters the site way too much as it is.

Option 1 or 2. I generally only like two kinds of site. 1: With only original content and 2: Sites that only sum up content from a number of other sites.

I generally do not like the mix

I'd like it much better if the reblogs would appear in a seperate rss feed. I already (and i suppose others do as well) read a lot of other blogs, most of the times resulting in reading an article once and seeing it linked about 5 times. Sure linking is good, else i wouldn't even have discovered all those blogs, but it would be nice if it was easy to choose not to read them

On the way it's showed on the i don't have much to say, i read your site by the rss feed, that is, whenever i read a new item i open the link associated with it, and read that page, but don't navigate any further through the site.

Original content here would really be great. I miss the more discussive, article-like posts of days past.

Dan: I think one of the reasons we have had less of that is that most of the authors have their own blogs to post to. I mean, look at the about page. Most of the people there are either not especially active poster or have well respected blogs of their own. I might be an exception to this (but then I don't contribute overly much), but take yourself, Russ or Anne for instance.

Wow, ok great - thank you all for the feedback, this is really helpful. Maybe even more helpful is that everyone seems to be pointing in the same direction. So current consensus is do reBlogging off the main blog, if at all.

Dan, that's actually a good point, and was in fact what interested me in the reBlog idea. Originally I was thinking that reBlog would help the current mishmash of content and link-pointers by labeling the link-pointers as such, and being more obvious about it. It seems that moving them off to another area would be an even bigger/better step in that direction.

I actually have a bunch of other questions I'd like to ask the readers, but I'll work on that separated reblog area and I'll fix this comment form before any more pestering. Any further feedback is welcome!

I'm a lone voice, by the looks of it, but I rather like the intermingling of reBlog content on the front page (though I'd agree that the quoted snippets might be better off in an RSS feed of their own).

Perhaps if the reBlog posts were styled to be more unobtrusive, folk would find the mix more palatable?

I agree with everyone else - separate the reBlog from the blog

Following up on Nate's original comments about the styling of the reBlog content, Jack Mottram makes an interesting point in that people might be warmer to them if they were less obtrusive. That said, I think I agree with most of the other people here with the idea of separating the original content from the reBlog.
