Firefox 0.9

  • Reported by Nate

Two friendly readers suggest posting a note that Firefox 0.9 is out now - good idea, it's a great browser and worth your minute or two to upgrade.

I've been playing with the installation today. Some readers may find that Themes and Extensions will not work properly. I'm actually going back to 0.8 until some of the bugs get fixed.

Yes, many of my favorite extensions do not work. I upgraded at work, but am going to hold off for a while at home. 0.8 works fine for me needs right now.

some of the features still seem a bit flakey (the theme manager seems borked when attempting install from a webpage...only solution so far is to download a theme locally and then drag the .jar file into it, for instance)

many extensions still need to be ported to 0.9, and the number of good themes seems to diminish with each point release...

if you're an eager early adopter, go ahead...the core stuff is all there. if you're reliant on a lot of extensions in 0.8, check to see that they're compatible first, before removing your old version.

Yep, I have had a lot of problems with this new release, which I installed over the top of 0.8...
Nothing worked as due and I had to uninstall and reinstall the 0.9 a few time before understanding that it needed the phoenix preference folder in the user setting folder being deleted.

Furthermore, the new default theme is awful and a lot of the old extensions do not work anymore..

GDR, yes, 0.8 must be uninstalled first, as the release notes say. And as I mentioned above, 0.9 compatible extensions/themes can be found on http://update.mozilla.org/?application=firefox

And about the theme, if you dont like it, you can choose from the 14 (at the moment) available themes. You will also find Qute there, the old Firefox theme.

FF 0.9 is greate! However it seems to have some problems with remote XUL contents, popup dialogs are not auto-resized as in 0.8

0.8 and 0.9 are co-existing happily on my system--you just need to choose a different installation path when you start (select the Custom install option). Since 0.9 uses a different profile folder location, it's not a problem. Also, there's a "Show Old Extensions" extension available, which is allowing me to run 4 old ones that haven't been updated so far.

Most of the extensions I use are there. (WebDeveloper, Adblock, All-in-one gestures), but I'm going to wait for Switch Proxy to become available.

I have installed it, but I'm going to keep using 0.8 for a while.

Hmm...I upgraded both my Win2K box and my OSX laptop to .09 without uninstalling .08 without trouble. I did have to reinstall my extensions, but I only use WebDeveloper and the DOM explorer, and those seem to work just fine in .09.

I get so frustrated these days when I'm in IE and I can't center-click a link to open a new tab. ;o)
