Emerica

  • Reported by Nate

Congratulations and kudos to huphtur, who has just completed a web standards based site for Emerica. huphtur's XHTML and CSS work makes Emerica the first skateboard site to follow the those highly advised web standards practices that we discuss here so often. Even better, huphtur put together a tech doc describing what was done. Good job huphtur!

So which is more important, a site that complies, or a site that is usable ? Depending on monitor contrast settings, many people won't be able to read that site, and finding links amongst the text is a chore.

Ian, certainly usability is important. Within the general concept of usability, isn't being able to read the site using a text browser useful? Also, considering that other sites of this nature are more likely to be locked into a flash presentation with no alternate content - this is probably a huge leap as is. Of course making sites as usable as possible is a great goal, but I also think that meeting the aesthetic expectations of your client base can sometimes be an overriding factor. If it's super accessible, but most skaters aren't interested in looking at it, one might end up defeating the larger interest.

I agree the colorscheme is a bit on the dark side, but that was something the art director requested, so that is a compromise you have make as a web designer. But, if we decided to brighten up the site, it would be easy to do, thanks to css.

huphtur, are you developing with an LCD monitor, or CRT ?

Ian: I developed on different platforms (mac and pc) with assorted monitors (crt and lcd) in diverse environments (dark office and outside with the laptop drinking some hot tea soakin up the sun) we never experienced any problems with the color scheme. I will however notify the art director about it. Maybe we can tweak the colors a bit. Thanks for the heads up.
