Changes in IE
Because of the Eolas lawsuite, Microsoft has changed the way IE works when it comes to embedded ActiveX objects created by the embed, object and applet elements. More about this on MSDN > Information for Developers about Changes to Internet Explorer and linked pages. See also articles by Apple and Macromedia regarding the subject. (Seems like the same article with the only changes lying in what plugin is used.)

Well, you can include a flash file without using a param element, and the same goes for quicktime movies or whatever. If you have no params as children for the object tag, the prompt will not display. Another thing nether Apple nor Macromedia mentions. Probably because then you can't tell the browser what application to use in rendering the file.

It's mentioned, but not prominently, because it would seem to restrict the page to viewing in IE/Win then... that's why it didn't get much traction.
As Paul Betlem notes, we're trying to find ways to accommodate IE/Win this way, while still accommodating other browsers too:

I really liked the take on this matter over at sidesh0w. Summed a lot of my feelings up. None of those are good feelings.

Just as Apple and Macromedia used the same boilerplate article text (probably supplied by Microsoft), so has RealNetworks.

Yes, I was struck by how the main articles on each site did seem similar... probably something to keep lawyerly types satiated, you know how that is.... ;-)
But there are more resources available at the Macromedia Active Content Developer Center. The upcoming Support Center will also have technotes as needed, and there's a discussion group too. Daily news at the Macromedia blogs. (Gosh, I didn't realize how much typing this all involved.... ;-)
