New Subscription Feature

  • Reported by Nate

You may have noticed that we have this new subscription feature here at WebGraphics. I wanted to take a moment to explain what it is, and to give proper credit to the fine folks who created it.

The functionality comes from the ever resourceful ScriptyGoddesses: Subscribe to Comments

This script enables any reader to sign-up for email notification whenever a comment is made to a particular post. A fine feature to have, simply for those interested in tracking a particular thread, but it does much more. There is a subscription managment interface, which allows subscribers to see which posts they are subscribed to, a "mass unsubscribe" unsubscribe feature, and of course, subscribers can simply track the posts that they find interesting.

One aspect that I liked in particular is that you don't actually have to register to use the system, and unsubscribing is remarkably easy. Subscribers can unsubscribe from a post via the post page itself, the subscription manager, or any of the emails that come through (there's an unsubscribe link in each email). There is also a subject line prefix [WG] so that email filtering is a snap.

So, thanks to Scriptygoddess, this feature is now up and running smoothly, but I'm also thinking of other services that might be provided, such as an email list one can subscribe to (read only) for those who want to recieve notification of *all* posts - would anyone want that though? Another option is a RSS feed for comments, and/or a RSS feed that includes a running comment count.

Hi, I have put you in my blo.gs blogroll which moves the last updated weblog up to the top of the list. But your weblog never makes it to the top, eventhough when I check here at your site, you *have* updated. Don't you ping blo.gs or weblogs.com? I have no clue why I can't see the updates you make. Perhaps you can tell me what your indexpage is called, like index.php, or index.html or something? Possibly if I enter that as the url, things will work better!

Sproet, I think I discovered the problem. Blo.gs has 2 entries for web-graphics.. one for "www.web-graphics.com" and one for "web-graphics.com". The second one is the more newer one, hopefully it updates correctly. I have been getting an ping error in MT, so the problem might be more complicated, I'll keep an eye on it and update here if more news surfaces.

Hi Nate, you were right, web-graphics.com minus the www is the solution :-) Weird of things like that get mixed up. It happened with more weblogs in my blogroll but I could mostly handle that by typing something like index.htm or so at the end of the address. Those for which that didn't work, I will do an extra search for. Maybe the same tricks works for them as it did for you. Thanks!

Jim over at blo.gs will combine two entries for you if you ask, so there doesn't need to be a right one and a wrong one, just the right one, and it doesn't break people's subscriptions. He's dead helpful like that :-)
