Change this here

  • Reported by Nate

Do you read webgraphics semi-regularly? Ever click through from your RSS reader of choice and actually view the regular HTML version of these pages? If so, I thought I'd open up a little post here purely for the purpose of giving you an opportunity to comment on any improvements to the site you can think of. Don't like how something works? Let me know. See a useful feature missing? Have an improvement idea for function or content structure?

Here's an example: one thing I'd like to see here is a list on the homepage of the last 5 comments made.

I'm not normally superstitious, but I just noticed that this post, which was made on Friday the 13th has quite the unfortunate post number as well (see url). Thankfully, despite the cultural context, these things have no actual meaning - see, nothing bad happened back here either.

I definitely read webgraphics every single day (the real page version, no RSS for me) because seeing the different posters and how they react to things differently is great. I think it'd really bring the "community" of readers/posters together if you listed the comments right on the front page, ala waferbaby... kinda. It definitely would bring people to post a comment that usually don't, and also I think it would bring more visitors in because of the varying points of view brought up in comments! Just a thought, keep up the great work guys!

One thing that bugs me: I have a perfectly good font size already set. What's with the body { font-size: 12px; } setting?

I read both via RSS and on the site. Overall I use RSS because of the irregular posting schedule that this and many other sites are on (and mine's the worst). But once I know a site is updated I visit it quite often. Webgraphics especially I like to click through to see all of the comments and the good links within them.

Nate,
  • More markup tags for entering comments ;-)
  • Maybe an rss-feed featuring posts and comments? Joi Ito wrote an MT-template for this (needs some tweaking, of course).

ok, I just added some tags onto the sanatize whitelist - so more is now possible through commenting. I'll add instructions to the page template, they will appear below the comment box shortly. Thanks to everyone who has commented with other good ideas - they are duly noted, and will be seriously considered as part of an upcoming changeup here. More ideas are, of course, very welcome.

Just playing around a littlebit. #webgraphics {layout: fancy} <layout fancy="true">webgraphics</layout> Problems: Colorcoding tags are there, matching css is not (yet). Update: I discovered the reload button. ;-) What can be done with the alt attribute? Not possible to insert title attribute inside the acronym tag.

Ok, Lemmie take a sec to respond to the other suggestions:
  • Mike: I'm not sure I understand, I don't see that on waferbaby, can you give another example or explain further?
  • Joshua: consider it done
  • Jim: consider it done
  • Narrator: not likely
  • iolaire: Thanks for the note, maybe offering an rss that indicates how many comments have been made would be helpful?
  • Firda: I've tossed this idea around in my head for a long time, there are some weblogs that really use categories well, I'm not sure that the multi-author situation of webgraphics is suited for that. It's still on the table, but I can't see a solid way of implementing it yet
  • Andreas: you already have one item taken care of, the other idea (rss with comments) is a good one too, maybe there could be 3 versions of the rss: regular, with comment count, and with full comments.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts, please add more if you have 'em.

Once I wanted to read old articles it took me about five minutes to find them under small 'Archive' link at top right coner. May be you will add calendar? PS: Sorry for my English

vo, no problem with your english, reads well here. I wondered if a calendar is useful, perhaps just quick links to various months? Another addition that will be included is a search box on the homepage, which might also help.

Regarding the search feature: I'd like to see it added to the standard page layout, so no extra clicks are required for a user to search the site from any page within the site.

Yes, Nate, you right and calendar is not a best solution. In fact now I've change my mind: I think, (prev.month) link at the end of blog body will be extremely useful for newcomers. The main catch with archive that if I'm a new visitor and once I'd read all current blog articles...I want read something else! So, it will be clear for me to press (previous month/articles/whatever) link rather look for archive.

Dan, good idea, consider it done. Vo, I see, that makes sense. Perhaps a "Last N entries" link at the bottom of the homepage current entries list.

Two typos - sorry for nitpicking: "Sanitize" instead of "Sanatize" (nitty gritty) "Textism" instead of "Texism" (referal page) And a suggestion: what about linking to this News aggregators directory on the index-page ("your newsreader of choice"), instead of to the Netnewswire homepage?

Thanks for nitpicking! All items should now be fixed, also I realized that the preview comment feature did not retain the new instructions (now it does). I need to update to Dean's Refer 2.0, but I'll do that tomorrow.

Yeah, sorry... I don't think waferbaby is such a good example afterall lol. I just think since there are a few(?) authors posting on webgraphics, this type of "community feeling" could be further extended by maybe putting like the "last 3 comments posted" underneath each post on the front page. I think that would encourage people to read the comments/post to comments, and join in on the discussion, get to know other readers better and stuff ;) Just a thought...

Right. There is no archive page for features anymore. The new content shows up on the home page and then there are several areas from there that older content appears under. I did mention the broken link to Nate quite a while ago, but he's been busy. - Nick

Thank you thank you for the bug reports. I have been busy - but that's no excuse against having broken links on the homepage! I aught to have some sort of link checking tool setup. In any case I'm thinking of transferring the "dev resources" into MT so that all authors could add/edit the links. Oh, and the two errors reported should be fixed now.

I read webgraphics (and Zeldman) every day and I find it a wonderful source of info and ideas. It would be nice to have a bookmark feature (cookie driven?) that could allow you to select the good-to-remember articles and easily find them even after several days or months.

GDR, thanks for the good idea! A while back I was thinking of adding something like John Weir's very cool clippings, but I don't think I have the mojo to make it work in Safari (a personal hangup - it's got to work in safari). More recently, I've been thinking about the scriptygoddess subscribe to post feature, it's a well rounded system that allows a reader to keep a running list of their favorite posts, and also be emailed when a new comment is added to their favorite posts. There's a little management module where you can see the posts you've subscribed to and unsubscribe. My only hesitation (as with any new feature) is that we might loose some of the current simplicity - the feature really has to be worth any added complexity.

Indeed, the clipping things would be cool, but beware of feature bloat. You see, your web browser already has such useful technology, and I've found it works really (and I mean *really* well). Keep up the good work Nate!

FIX THE COMMENT ICON! I forgot to mention this one earlier. I don't think the comment icon is very intuitive. Once comments are made, and you see the 'x# comments' text link, then it's easy to see there are comments, but when that icon is alone, I'm really not sure if it has any meaning. How about by default you have the icon and a text link of 'comment'?

Darell, it's been like that for a long time, and although I'm kind of blind to the issue at this point, you have a good point. Changes will make it a non-issue very soon.

Adding a title attribute to the comment icon would already make it so much easier and intuitive to determine it's function. And it's not that difficult to implement. ;)
