Contribute a Success?

  • Reported by James

JD is reporting on extremely high satisfaction rates (96%) for it's Contribute line. Discussed on Web-Graphics before.

Have any of our current readers rolled Contribute out on a recent project? I'd love to hear how it's going.

I would, if there were a Mac version of the client.

I've had problems with Contribute, particulary on Lotus DNFS servers, where the content is uploaded to one server, and then copied a couple of hours later to the actual web servers. The problem is that Contribute tries to read back the data immediately after writing it. If it can't, it prevents me from going to the next step, instead aborting with a "the web server must be down" error. It's only after reading through the Contribute knowledge base that I found this little tidbit of information, and found a workaround. I've also found the Contribute software to be a tad flaky, even on Windows 2000. I was initially enthusiastic about Contribute, given all the positive feedback I heard from leading web designers, but after trying it out, I feel cheated.

Contribute is great when it works, but there are still a lot of bugs. Just now it kicked me off the sever. Boom! Thanks a lot. I can't access the Internet at all, with or without Contribute. No clue what to do, and forget about calling anyone for technical support. It's email and a 48 hour wait for assistance in writing. Sometimes you wite something in the edit mode, but when it's published the sentences are chopped up or the menu buttons appear in different colors, not the ones intended. Other times you click on Publish and zip happens; all you see is a spinning rainbow-colored circle, going round and round. Time for a computer nap, so you turn off it off, turn back on, and pray for better luck next time. Is Contribute worth buying? Depends on your frustration threshold and your desire to create/edit existing sites.

Contribute is a great idea that "isn't quite there". I'm hoping version 3.0 will be a major upgrade. One of it's biggest issues (and a difficult one to overcome for MM) is that it only edits static files. The day it connects with a database to edit dynamic pages is the day it will truly be a powerful app.

It has a lot of bugs, as noted above connection issues are rampant. We've also had some major issues with it properly displaying standards compliant CSS layouts. It's engine displays pages similar to IE 5.5 in preview mode and similar to IE 5.0 in edit mode. Why they do this is beyond me! As many of us are aware IE has the worst support for standards of any "modern" browser avialable. I'm sure whatever rendering engine their using is mostly their own proprietary code...however they should consider talking to the Mozilla folks about using their code.

Another issue. You can only set very general restrictions for users site wide. We need the ability to set restrictions on individual pages. For instance you might want the client to be able to edit/manipulate table layouts on one page, but only edit text adn nothing else on another page. Currently there's no way we could find to do this.

I could keep going, but I think i'll stop there ;)
