They're Listening

  • Reported by Evan

It seems as though we've come a long long way from the days when we'd complain on our blogs about what we didn't like about our web browsers and how they could be different (a la Zeldman ;) and knowing damn well that nothing was ever going to change. It seems like it was just yesterday that we were discussing href titles showing up in Safari's status bar, and thanks to yesterday's build, here they are! (If you're using Safari, just mouse over these links and look at the status bar. Thanks Dave!)

Is there anything you asked for (or thought about asking for) that's has or hasn't shown up, gotten fixed, or changed for better or worse (besides tabs, of course) that we may have missed?

Wait. The TITLE content is being displayed in the status bar, and _not_ in a tooltip? Ack. Of course, that doesn't change the point of the post: that we're being listened to (even if the execution of the wishlist isn't ideal). : )

I'm with vi10n. Putting the title in the status bar doesn't make any sense. I don't see any reason why they can't display them as a tooltip. It's a clear waste of eye movement.

Hmm, maybe their placement has something to do with the Aqua Human Interface Guidelines. Does anyone else have any insight as to why they chose the status bar instead of help tags (tooltips)?

I'm still waiting for the ability to turn off font smoothing.

I don't see anything in the HELP TAGS description that would preclude the use of tooltips in Safari. The TITLE/CITE/ABBREVIATION/ACRONYM data belongs in a tooltip, not in the status bar... we shouldn't have to look down for this metadata... moreover, such data is often long enough to spill out of a status bar space. Not to mention what happens when folks turn off the status bar, but still want metadata of this sort. *ack*
