Flash and XHTML validity

  • Reported by Nate

Important issue of A List Apart for those wanting to combine the advantages of Macromedia Flash within a valid XHTML page: Flash Satay. Especially interesting is how the author shared the analysis and experimentation process with the embed and object tags in an effort (well spent) towards cross browser compliance and XHTML validity.

I found this experiment was extremely interesting until I discovered that it only worked for simple Flash animations and did not support much in the way of interactivity let alone communication with the browser via ActionScript. The fact that you have to create two dummy files to get it to work in the first place will mean that it will be largely ignored except in practice although accepted in theory.

Interesting point Steve, although (in a very general way) it seems like simple flash is more often actually interwoven with non-flash stuff, whereas heavy duty flash is more often on it's own page - which could be coded using perfectly valid HTML 4.

Of course that's a gross over generalization, but may be worth noting. Also of note - a survey to test the result of the Satay method (conducted by the A List Apart author.
