PHP with Apple's Dev Tools

  • Reported by Nate

An article in apple's internet developer library details why the free development tools (available for download via free registration with the apple developer center) maybe a great choice for the serious php and perl coder in the OSX environment. I'm doing the hefty 292 Megabyte download to give it a shot, but I'll be surprised if it ends up being a better choice than trusty ol' BBEdit.

Let us know how you end up liking Apple’s code editor, Nate. I’ve written a bit of code with BB but haven’t been thrilled with it–so I find myself VI-in’ it most of the time (though I’m not writing much code these days!). The biggest (only?) thing I miss from my Windows days is Allaire Homesite–what a great piece of software–perhaps one of my all time favorites–and the apple editor looks like it has comparable functionality.

By the way, are you glad you finally made the switch to X? I’m happy to help if you happen to need any.

By the time I got into coding, I was doing almost everything on my Inspiron using EditPlus... rivals BBEdit but is missing a few nifty features that the E+ authors just don’t seem interested in adding. I’m also selling my old PB to gather proceeds for a new iMac, iBook, or eMac (can’t make up my mind...) so please do let us know how the Apple tools work out for you.

Ok, I’ve messed with the development tools a little bit. I think this is one of those “to each, their own” situations. It is handy to have file window which shows all files organized in your project, and the syntax coloring is nice, and there are many many ways to configure and optimize the program to your liking. I haven’t done as much as I probably should have with CVS, but if I had, I’d probably appreciate the many CVS related tools. So it’s worth subscribing to the ADC and downloading, it may be the tool you’ve been waiting for. On the flip side, I just don’t see myself using it much, it’s fairly slimline, but the various features and tabs intended for C developers makes me feel like I’ve discovered some legos in the duplo box, watch out, I might choke. Also, much of what I appreciate about it, it already available (and in a better form) in BBEdit. One thing that is available, and which I haven’t yet figured out in BBEdit, is a “end of the line” keyboard shortcut, but that being the only hangup, I’m won’t be switching text editors just yet.
