Opera Bookmarklets

“Hi. This note is just to focus your attention on the latest release of Opera Browser: 6.02. This version lacks every support of the bookmarklets technology!!! They disable it in the final build (1101). The latest enabled version is 6.02 build 1087 (beta). I thought you had to know this... bye gdr”

This is news to me, honestly I hadn't been using bookmarklets in Opera too much, so testing with prior versions for bookmarklet compatibility isn't something I've done to much extent. Upon downloading the latest version, I can't seem to find any bookmarklets that work, even the very simple ones. Perhaps they have some reason for disabling javascript in bookmarks? (assuming this is what was done) Any corrections and/or further information would be appreciated.

It does seem like bookmarklets are disabled. Which doesn’t especially surprise me. I could certainly imagine them being a security risk.

This seems a strange decision to me. Opera is very popular among web professionals, who are the exact range of people who appreciate bookmarks. It would seem to make more sense for Opera to have a feature like IE (where adding a bookmarklet results in a warning dialog popping up saying “This link contains code and may be unsafe... do you want to add it?”

I’m a bit confused, is this the result of a bug in the latest build, or an intentional removal of the feature. I think of Opera as one of the most feature-rich browsers, especially in terms stuff web authors might want to do (ok, maybe moz should win that prize)–so removal of the ability to use bookmarklets seems quite odd. Phil Burns has added a highlighted note about the problem to his list of opera specific bookmarklets.

That google groups thread has posts by Opera employees and they don’t give the impression that the bookmarklets removal was deliberate. I would be very surprised if they did not make a return in the next Opera release.
