Scotty, check out the layout at Paul‘s delete.me–its rather similar to the layout you’re hoping to acheive. Unfortunately, your site (if you keep the design you have now in your transition to css) will incorporate the “box model” which is somewhat difficult to acheive which sometimes is a problem for those of us in the house that are wary of shutting out those who use older or beta browsers. It is easy though–if it weren’t, none of us would have done it, yo!

Hey Scotty–you might try starting out with one of these to get started, but like evan mentioned, it won’t fly in older/beta browsers. Best way to approach it (I think) is to start of by stripping everything out of your site, all the extranious table tags, extra stylings,–all of it. So you’re left with a “text-only” site. Style that up so it’s readable and pleasant for older browsers, then go on to do some advanced stuff for newer stable browsers. Having a clean slate to start with will be a big headstart.
