What's the Haps?
I've been curious for a while about how and where people go to get their news (while) on the web or their computers. For instance, if I had five minutes to sit down at the computer to find out what was going on (in my case, world news, web-dev, and blog-dom), I'd open up MacReporter, a news aggregator Docklet for OS X and a browser to visit SlashDot, the great customizable news aggregator site Daily Rotation, and a select few of my personal favorite blogs (including this one, of course!).
If you had just a moment, where would you go, what would you use to get there, and what in particular would you look for?

I’ve recently started using Radio Userland though I did use AmphetaDesk at work for a while (hopefully those w2k kinks are worked out!). A new entrant in the playing field is Mozilla bookmark groups which open a set of pages in different tabs. For months now, tabbed browsing has been my preferred way of visiting the daily sites. My still dominant method for weblog surfing is using my link-drag-over gesture in Mozilla. I visit a couple of blogs and drag over the blogrolls, do the finishing move (right-up-left) and all the links open in tabs. I start from the right most tab, and ctrl-w to close each one as a read it.3. April 29, 2002 05:33 PM

I must say, I’m a huge fan of the tabs as well but I haven’t been able (well, haven’t really looked yet) to figure out how to bookmark a group of tabs in OS X (anyone want to drop me a hint real quick?). I also browse my open tabs exactly the same way.4. April 29, 2002 05:48 PM

Blogzilla wrote up how to make bookmark groups. Frankly, it’s not how I would have implemented it, buried in the add bookmark dialog under the enabling condition of having multiple tabs open. A contextual rider on the tab-bar or a new entry in the bookmark menu would have made the feature much more discoverable. The whole tab thing is a bit of a un-specced feature, supposedly crafted by Moz’s chief xul rock star off hours.5. April 29, 2002 05:52 PM

Ok AndyEd, I downloaded the gestures thing and got to playing with it, trying to quickly open all the links on web-graphics’ homepage in tabs. One time, it worked, another, they all opened new windows. Can you explain how your blogrolling thing works? Do you highlight the blogrolls? And what about that thing I saw recently about adding every link on a page to a sidebar window?6. April 29, 2002 06:00 PM

The finishing move for new tabs is right-up-left. The finishing move for new windows is right-up. For blogrolls, the key is just to drag over the links, then do the finishing move. This may or may not highlight the links, depending upon what button you’ve configured to initiate gestures (in preferences->advanced->mouse gestures). If you mess up, you can cancel a gesture by pausing for half a second before releasing the mouse. The links sidebar, while a bit aged at this point, is very handy. Get it at segment7 from drbrain.7. i’ve been a dailyrotation user for ages now ever since geekboys.org went down (geekboys was also a news aggregator site but with like 3 times as many feeds). unsatisfied i’ve started working on my own lil news aggregator thing, which will be completely customisable once finished. you can view it (sometimes) here. any suggestions would be great. there’s also localised content for aussie visitors hehe.8. Does anyone here know of Syndic8? From their site:- A community-driven effort to gather syndicated news headlines...
- A readable master list of syndicated news content...
- An XML list of syndicated news content...
- Quality of server measurement of all feeds, with statistics and history...
- Complete statistics on every aspect of the site’s content... Reviews and pointers to syndicated tools and sites...
- A very complete set of XML-RPC services...
- A plan to evangelize sites to syndicate their content...
- A categorization system which uses existing schemes such as DMOZ
- Articles and tutorials on syndication...

I do. Know about syndicat8.com, that is. They have a whole host of searchable feeds (right on the homepage), and a very handydocuments section (which includes a bunch of HowTo docs for putting webfeeds on your own site).10. April 30, 2002 12:26 PM

Daily Rotation is the bomb for tech news. Anything else, go somewhere else.
I used to use geekboys too, and they did have a lot of sites, but so many of them were dead.
And newsisfree, etc... too hard to configure for personal use.....

I use AmphetaDesk, which is a cop-out, since I coded the blasted thing ;) ...
