Blueprint

September 5th, 2007 by Noel Jackson

A young blogger named Olav Bjørkøy who first introduced me to an easier way of fixing transparent PNGs in IE6 has now brought us one of the very first CSS Frameworks.

The framework is named Blueprint and aims and providing a “grid and sensible typography,” among other things. It’s very quickly gotten quite a lot of attention, and rightly so. It’s handsomely crafted and to some could be the holy grail of css based design, on the other hand some of it’s not-quite-so-semantic class names have started some debate. Either way, it’s gotten some pretty fantastic attention in just the first few days of its first release.

Me? I think it’s really neat. I’ve started using it for one project and find that, while at some times it feels redundant, in the end it made my work a lot easier and I ended up writing less code than I thought. I’m not sure I’ll stick with it for everything I work on, but I’ll definitely use it for prototyping and any projects that it would mesh well with.

So what about you? What are your thoughts?

well, Blueprint is pretty simple stuff, really… after all, it’s only css.
I tried to use it, cause the “float me” columning is the best approach to modular grid designs, but I prefer to use my own naming conventions, and save some precious kylobites.

I just used Blueprint for a small site that had a short deadline. Like you, I found it very easy and fast to work with, though I agree with your and others’ reservations. In the end, you have to use whatever tools are best for the project. In this case, it was perfect.

You (and others, I hope!) might be interested in a program I’ve made that allows you to sketch out layouts and generate HTML and CSS to go with (or without) Blueprint automatically. There’s also an option to make things a little more semantic. It’s called “Plumb” and the project page is here: http://code.google.com/p/plumb/

It’s at version 0.1 which I’m using to mean that it’s very young and impressionable and bug reports and feedback are very very heartily encouraged.
