Who do you trust? The Web-Graphics Collective endorsement…

October 20th, 2006 by Andy

Nate and I started work on web-graphics.com as a search engine, home grown with spidering by bookmarklet with the introduction of IE 4 in 1997.

With the release today of IE7, it’s a fitting day to come full circle, and I offer my first contribution to WBG in years: macro:andyed.webGraphicsCollective.

So I work for Microsoft on Live Search and we recently revamped this macros thing for crafting custom search spaces and expanded our search syntax to further enable capture of the link structure of the web to define a range of sites and pages to search.

I’ve crafted this macro to trust web graphics authors and the sources they link to as well as sources that link to them. It really pays off for queries like unobtrusive, where obviously, we’re talking about javascript. Or standards, where it’s all about parity and progress on the web, abandoning hacky & impoverished event models and supporting scalable design with min/max height/width css. E.G. I’m very excited IE7 supports max-width, but really bummed we’re stuck with the cruddy, proprietary non-bubbling event model.

The exact definition of the search macro attempted to grab all of the WBG authors with personal blogs. Our linkmap operators at Live Search can only go so deep, from a root for outbound links, and one sublevel for inbound, hence the mix of linkFromDomain and linkDomain:

  • linkdomain:web-graphics.com
  • linkfromdomain:web-graphics.com
  • linkfromdomain:surfmind.com
  • linkdomain:fjordaan.uklinux.net
  • linkfromdomain:whatdoiknow.org
  • linkfromdomain:meryl.net
  • linkfromdomain:gazingus.org
  • linkfromdomain:evanrose.com
  • linkfromdomain:hivelogic.com
  • linkfromdomain:unraveled.com
  • linkdomain:akira.arts.kuleuven.ac.be/andreas
  • linkdomain:fjordaan.uklinux.net
  • linkfromdomain:iaslash.org
  • linkfromdomain:nickfinck.com
  • linkfromdomain:ordinary-life.net
  • linkfromdomain:pixy.cz
  • linkfromdomain:homelesspixel.de
  • linkfromdomain:kapowaz.net
  • linkfromdomain:relevantly.com
  • linkfromdomain:halfass.com

And finally, prefer:site:web-graphics.com to bump up the rank of WBG content, if present. That puts us right up against the max number of operators!

Please give it a try. Note: you can add the WBG collective macro to your firefox or IE7 searchbox with the OpenSearch link from the footer on that link.

I’m confused. Did you make a search field that searches content from specific urls, and that uses windows’ live search engine to give the results? I’m not well-versed in the jargon, but have an interest in learning more about search.
